The Feminist Stokvel kicks off the FS Film Club on Friday 5 June with a screening of the award-winning 1966 film Black Girl by iconic Senegalese film-maker Ousmane Sembene. Black Girl is a beautiful and poignant story of a woman who leaves Senegal to work as a nanny for an expat French family and finds herself immersed in a domestic nightmare.
The launch of the FS Film Club marks a change in gear for the Feminist Stokvel, a collective of comprised of eight women in media, academia and the arts. With interests that range from politics, to lifestyle and beauty, to literature and artistic expression, the Feminist Stokvel is currently cooking up a range of offerings for audiences who want fun, smart and creative approaches to what it means to be African and feminist today.
To date the Feminist Stokvel has given the natural hair community in Jozi two highly-informative and much talked about Hair Soirees where hair is the entry point for practical, emotional and thought provoking conversations about about identity and self care. The Hair Soiree is monthly event geared specifically at providing a safe space for black women to learn more from one another about how to care for hair and share experiences.
It is in this spirit that we open the FS Film Club to everyone who is interested. Everyone who participates in a Feminst Stokvel event is a part of us. We encourage questions, debate and knowledge sharing. FS is a small slice of the new wave of feminism and Pan-African social activism that is currently sweeping the planet, and we invite you to join us.
The screening is FREE and open to everyone on Friday 5 June at King Kong, which is situated at 6 Verway Street, Doornfontein, at 18:00 for a 19:00 (sharp!) screening. Cool drink, popcorn and ice cream will be on sale, but guests are advised to bring their own alcoholic beverages.
