The 1st Kiehl's Day in South Africa - Stop Hunger Now!

By . - Thursday, November 08, 2012

Did you need another reason to love Kiehl's? Really?! I was sold from the beginning, but I'll give you what you need anyway.
On 12 Nov 2003, the mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, declared 12 November KIEHL’S DAY, in honour and recognition of Kiehl’s contribution to New York City communities for over a century. Since then, the Kiehl’s Family around the world celebrates Kiehl’s Day on 12 November, and aims to focus our attentions on this day to making an impact in our communities.

In honour of our 1st Kiehl’s Day here in South Africa, Kiehl’s will be packing off 5,000 meals for our partners in making a difference to our community, Stop Hunger Now, which will go to children in informal Early Childhood Development centres (or crèches) in Alexandra*, Johannesburg. Our objectives for Kiehl’s Day and our initiative with Stop Hunger Now, really is to create awareness in our immediate community on the hunger concerns on our doorstep and to get Kiehl’s patrons and Sandton City shoppers to join us to pack a few meals, as part of their contribution.

What is Stop Hunger Now you ask?

Stop Hunger Now, a non-profit organisation, aims  to take care of the nutritional needs of children in early childhood development phase (below the age of 5) in disadvantaged areas. They focus their work in the informal sector with unregistered Early Childhood Development centres (or crèches), where a Gogo for example looks after up to 30 children during the day. The infrastructure in these crèches are mostly not up to the standard required for these ECD’s to be registered with Government, and thus cannot get any Government funding. In such instances the Gogo would spend her own pension on feeding the children she looks after, as this very often may be the only meal these children get daily. So the aim of SHN is to provide food for a ECD for a minimum period of 6 months, so that the Gogo can then save her pension in order to upgrade her facilities (e.g. build a flush toilet, put up a security wall etc) so that in the end, her facility is upgraded to such an extent, that she is able to register her ECD and qualify for a government grant.
