I Coloured My Hair! Read All About It...

By . - Thursday, June 20, 2013

I coloured my hair earlier this week, and I promised that I would write about what I did before colouring, and what I plan on doing now that I have coloured my hair.

My Intention:

I wanted to take my hair from a very dark brown to a golden brown with highlights and low lights. Very multidimensional! See the pictures below to get a close enough idea of what I am trying to achieve. The pictures aren't that great, but you can check out the music video that this girl is featured in to get a better look at the colour here ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaczoQyCFO4

What I Got:

Since my natural hair colour is a very dark brown, I knew that I would need to lighten my hair in a two part session. I'll be revisiting the hair dye in 8 to 9 weeks time as long as I keep the integrity of my hair until then. Unfortunately, it's really hard to see how much lighter my hair is when it isn't straight and under sunlight. Trust my, I've got the front and roots of my hair about 4 shades lighter. It's deep! The ends of my hair didn't lighten as quickly as the rest of my hair, so there is a gradient effect of sorts.

I promise to straighten my hair soon and get better pictures. It's just that the health of my hair is far more important than the pictures. You understand, right?

Why Use A Box Of Blonde Hair Colour?

Believe it or not, I did a ton of research for what I wanted. While a lot of people claimed that the best way to achieve the colour I wanted from my dark brown hair was to bleach it and then apply colour, I knew that would be wayyyyy too damaging for my precious strands and plain old not worth it. The other option was to get highlights over a few months in order to achieve a gradual change. I didn't like that option either. The next best option was to lighten dark hair with a ash blonde box of hair dye.

If I would have picked up any box of blonde hair dye, I probably would have come out with orange hair. This isn't hard to do, so I wanted to be careful. It turns out that ash toned in hair dye help to keep the orange tones away when 'going blonde". This particular brand and colour give my hair awesome tones. My husband just stares at my hair in the sun and says, "WOW!". I'll be buying this same exact box of dye and applying it to my hair in 8 or 9 weeks to lighten my hair to my desired shade.

What I Did Before Dyeing My Hair:

Besides research like a freaking mad woman, I decided to prepare my hair for the controlled damage I would be putting my hair through. I kept my hair in a protective hairstyle for 8 weeks and allowed my hair to rest for 2 weeks afterwards. During the protective style, I kept my hair well moisturized and used a ton of Sunny Isle Jamaican Black Castor Oil for hot oil treatments.

I then removed my protective style and gave myself a good protein treatment with CHI Deep Brilliance Silkeratin 17. I absolutely love and swear by this stuff! Exactly one week before I knew I would colour my hair, I started doing hot oil treatments overnight. By the morning my hair had completely absorbed all the oil. I would apply a little more oil to my hair every other night and cover my hair with a conditioning cap all the way up until the day I decided to colour my hair.

I was confident with the condition of my hair to apply permanent hair dye to it. I'm happy to say that my hair did not fall out, turn orange and it isn't breaking (so far).

What I'll Be Doing For The Next 8 to 9 Weeks:

I'll be doing weekly protein treatments with my CHI Deep Brilliance Silkeratin 17 for at east 30 minutes, rinsing and following with a moisturizing deep conditioner. This is a non-negotiable if I intend to keep my hair on the top of my head.

I'll also be moisturizing every night and sealing with my Sunny Isle Jamaican Black Castor Oil. I will only wash with a sulfate free shampoo of my choice to combat stripping and drying. I basically plan to keep it simple and keep my hair on the top of my head.

What I'm Worried About:

Dryness, breakage, length retention and ugly roots!

I don't do dry hair and breakage. I will cut it all off again if I have to. I'll be moisturizing my hair like a mad woman!

I'm still on a quest for super long hair, but the reality is that I will most likely have to dust and trim more often then I do right now. Let's see if I can get back to bra-strap length by January 2014.

I will have to keep up my roots until I decide that I don't want this colour anymore. I'll probably go back to a dark brown when I'm ready.

Stay tuned as I continue developing the colour that I want while keep all my hair on the top of my head. I know you have an opinion, so leave a comment in the section below.

  1. I want to dye my hair a nice red/burgundy color and I've dyed my hair twice before making the decision to be a natural. Both times it didn't look like I even touched my hair with any color. Now, that I am trying to become more in tune with my hair, I do plan on trying to dye it again but not until I've done the research that I,did not do before.I am scared that dyeing will reverse the progress I've made so far,but I really want a different color to my hair. Obviously, I'll keep you and everyone in the know when I decide to color again.
