Kavuli's Tips For Maintaining Healthy Relaxed Hair

By . - Tuesday, March 05, 2013

Yes, relaxed hair is damaged, but it's controlled damage in order to straighten it. Maintaining healthy relaxed hair is totally possible if you follow a few steps. I believe that all hair should be treated like fine silk, but relaxed hair requires a bit more TLC due to it's processed nature. Check out my top tips for relaxed hair, and see if you can't get your hair in the best shape of your life.

1. Let a Professional Relax Your Tresses

I'm not saying that your mama doesn't know how to apply a relaxer, but I am saying that chemical processes should be done by license professionals. You know that hole in the wall 'hair salon' isn't licensed to be running a business let alone a salon. Why would you put your precious strands of hair in the hands of novices? Do your research and find an accredited salon with licensed professionals to apply chemical treatments to your hair. It may take you a while, and it may not be cheap but you and your hair are worth it. Develop a good relationship with your licensed professional and rest assured that they are applying your relaxer properly.

2. Stop Overprocessing!

Using a relaxer that is too strong for your hair, applying the relaxer to previously processed hair, not waiting at least 6 to 8 weeks between relaxers and leaving the chemicals on for too long are four of the best ways to overprocess your hair. Consistently applying straightening chemicals to previously processed hair will eventually lead to damage, breakage and possible permanent hair loss. Don't take chances! Follow the directions always!

3. Low Heat / No Heat Is The Way To Go

Daily use of flat irons, curling irons, blow dryers and heated rollers can eventually lead to dry, crispy and damaged hair. A once a month 'heat pass' is not such a bad thing, but this business of running the flat iron through your hair daily is not what's hot in the streets! It's hot on your hair and it's damaging it! Get in the habit of low to no heat styling with a few of these styling techniques:

  • Braids
  • Buns
  • Curlformers
  • Flexi-rods
  • Wet sets
  • Wrapping

4. Wrap Your Hair At Night

Not only does wrapping your hair at night save you time in the morning, but it also protects your delicate tresses while sleeping, especially if you add in extra protection in the form of a silky hair cover or pillowcase. When you mold your hair to the shape of your head, you preserve body and volume in a low-maintenance fashion that requires absolutely no heat.

5. Deep Condition / Condition

Relaxers can strip the natural oil from the hair leaving it dry and brittle. Replacing that moisture with high quality conditioners to maintain moisture levels is essential. Follow each shampoo with a rinse out conditioner and a deep conditioner four times per month for optimal health.

6. Trim as Needed

The ends of your hair are the oldest part of the hair and need to be treated with kid gloves. They aren't expected to last forever, and a trim will eventually be in order. Depending on how well you take care of your hair will determine how often you need a trim or even a cut. You will obviously need to trim more often if you insist on using heated hair tools and chemical treatments too often.

7. Wear Protective Styles

Protective styles are your friends. Give you relaxed tresses a break  for a while. You will still need to wash, condition and deep condition on a regular basis, but those precious strands won't be combed through on a regular basis. You'll find that your hair will even retain moisture a bit better during this time.
