My First Henna Experience

By . - Monday, July 30, 2012

I recently decided to join the band wagon and get some henna for my hair. I've heard about all the lovely benefits this powder had, and I was yearning for a rich color for my hair. I went out and bought Glory Henna in Chestnut.
I understood that the henna needs to have something acidic added to it in order for the dye to be released. I checkout around the house, and all I had was a grapefruit and white vinegar. I decided that the juice from one medium grapefruit would do the job.

I mixed until the dye released and added some honey, castor oil and hot water. The consistency was like a thick pudding and it ended up looking like this.

I applied this mixture to my hair from roots to tips. It actually wasn't as messy as I thought it would be, but I still lined the bathroom floor with newspaper to be sure. I didn't get any pictures of my hair with the henna in since I was home alone. Please remember to wear gloves when applying your henna. I forgot my gloves and had to work very fast to keep my hands from turning chestnut brown. I covered my head with cling wrap and a plastic conditioning cap. I covered all of that with a wool hat as well. I then sat under a dryer for 45 minutes to get the process moving along. I left the henna in for a total of 4 hours.

Rinsing was easy and I followed with a moisturizing shampoo. I then allowed my moisturizing conditioner to sit on my head for approximately 30 minutes. My hair was butter soft and had a very rich color to it. I couldn't wait for my hair to dry so that I could see how shiny it would be. I dried pretty fast in my flat twists. Check the picture below to remember what my original hair color was like.

Here is what my hair looks like now after a flat twist out. It's super soft!

The color from a henna treatment gets better with each application, and my hair feels so good right now. I'll be doing another treatment in 2 weeks or so.

What do you think? Will you be trying a henna treatment anytime soon?

Have a Good Hair Day!!!

    1. The henna was from a health food store, The Wellness Warehouse. I did not measure my ingredients, I just mixed until I got the desired consistency. I will be hennaing once every couple of months, but how often you can henna depends on hoe YOUR hair responds to it. Thanks for your comment.

  3. Wow thanks for this post! i have read so much about 100% henna and how everyone is raving about it, but i cant get my hands on it- i did see Glory henna in one of my stores, but thought it's not good enough! Because Glory henna contains citric acid, i didnt realise you still need to add something acidic and allow for the henna to cure- the instructions on the box doesnt specify- only that you need to mix with hot water and off you go. but your results speak for itself and thats volumes! your hair looks like candyfloss curls- i cant wait to try it out myself!
    Thanks again!

  6. Glory henna is not pure henna. It contains quite high levels of chemicals, especially ppd. Pure henna can only make hair orange.
